Monday 17th July 2023 Protest outside Cape / Altrad office
Under the banner headline 'Cape Must Pay' the Asbestos Victims Support Group Forum UK is demanding that Cape, a former asbestos manufacturer now owned by Altrad, donate £10 million to Mesothelioma reasearch. Around 40,000 men and women have died of mesothelioma since the UK asbestos ban in 1999. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimates a similar number will die over the next 20 years. Mesothelioma takes 20-60 years to develop following exposure to asbestos so, although no longer imported or used, asbestos is still a problem for for some time to come. Many public buildings, such as schools and hospitals, workplaces and homes still have asbestos in the fabric of the building, posing risks of exposure to future generations unless safely removed. New documents obtained after a bitter court struggle show that Cape sought to hide the true dangers of the asbestos products it sold from the l95()s to the 1980s. Many died because of Cape’s actions. Thousands are still being newly diagnosed with asbestos diseases like mesothelioma, even today. Join us in Warrington and ask your MP to sign Early Day Motion 93 (tabled 23rd May 2022).
